\u00a0\u00a0 Yesterday I went with my husband to a sports’ superstar’s booksigning.\u00a0And, because it was a book signing,\u00a0we both bought a copy of the book along with the 400 or so folks standing in line with us.\u00a0\u00a0I figured I’ll\u00a0donate the book to a fundraiser for a friend’s grandson who has a seizure disorder and will probably be wheelchair bound the rest of his life and, if I want to read the book, I’ll borrow my husband’s copy.<\/p>\n
As we waited in the line which wound around a gym, my husband asked if I wouldn’t love to have that many people at one of my book signings. “Sure,” I said, “but it’s been awhile since I’ve hit a 3-pointer.” \u00a0The line moved quickly\u00a0into\u00a0a cordoned off area\u00a0where\u00a0a burly woman in a hot pink sports polo slapped\u00a0her arm out at my chest\u00a0and barked, “Stop here!\u00a0Hand him the book!”\u00a0In case I didn’t get who\u00a0the burly woman\u00a0meant,\u00a0she pointed across my chest to a guy who doubled as security and official book opener. He opened the book to the wrong page for signing and\u00a0set it in front of the superstar who signed it, smiled and\u00a0handed it back.\u00a0And I want to pause here to tell you that I will always like and admire this superstar for\u00a0that shy smile.<\/p>\n
But\u00a0I thought about my husband’s question, the idea of having that many folks\u00a0waiting to get a book signed\u00a0by a superstar and I\u00a0answered\u00a0my husband’s earlier question with a second, more honest answer. Sure,\u00a0I’d love to sell as many copies of Janis Joplin as this sports superstar. But I like\u00a0my book signings\u00a0better.\u00a0I get to\u00a0connect to each reader who waits in line.\u00a0I get\u00a0a moment to\u00a0talk with readers about Janis\u00a0or who and what\u00a0else inspires\u00a0us.\u00a0They share what they’re reading or what they loved about the last book they picked up.\u00a0And I go home with a booklist and feeling like I’ve just made a whole new group of friends and I can’t wait to write for them again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
